The front page is far too busy. Its hard to figure what you're looking through in order to get to the information. When reviewing ideas, look at other counties and how they've developed their webpages. It shouldn't be overwhelming when opening to the home page.
Consider drop down navigation buttons rather that sidebar navigation.
Some of the links, say for adopting an animal through animal control, go in a circle without providing information as it says it does. Each link and such needs to be verifiied to where it goes to make sure it isn't useless. Also, it took too many clicks to get to a page, Not very user friendly.
The Site must have the most powerful search engine possible so I can find what I am looking for in seconds, not minutes and hours. Yes, I have spent hours looking for stuff on the site
Have the site support all mobile devices, not just iPhone and iPad, including mobile apps to specific functions. Move away from a browser centric world.
The new design should not be browser centric; designers need to recognize more citizens are giving up laptops for mobile devices and ipad like devices. These are apps driven devices, not browser driven.
Add the topographic map names to the APN search/GIS search results.
Reduce the number of links to get to information like election results. And if you have a link, make sure it works, like election results.
I wish that the GIS system wasn't browser-specific (and worse, Windows only).
I suggest you search for "Nevada County Government" because the top listings go no where. I had trouble finding your site.
In trying to make some suggestions I find even this site to solicit is difficult to navigate. I don't mean to be rude but it is possible your designer needs new support.
You need to look at other city's and county's web sites locally - city of Rancho Cordova, El Dorado County, Sacramento County, somewhat Placer County. Why? Simplicity and ease of getting and finding and downloading documents. I'm sorry, but Nevada County's document system sucks, and at least the Community Development Department site is SO-o-o-o-o busy and convoluted. I'm sorry, but Nevada County's document system sucks, and at least the Community Development Department site is SO-o-o-o-o busy and convoluted. Even when I do find a document, they are usually NOT up to date. My primary field is in the community development section. These other counties have easy to find documents, in standard PDF format, in "easy to figure out what the document is" naming.

Set up a twitter net work to alert citizens to emergencies and then provide a scrolling display of messages for non twitter users, but need access to the information.
Access to GIS and DPW service request forms currently require Internet Explorer. They should be accessible with whatever browser the user has and not require Explorer. From my experience Explorer is not a very good browser.
look at other libraries. Juneau Alaska has a clean looking and easy to use site that works with several systems.
In the Property Search function of the CDA "One Stop Shop," have the map link to the County's sophisticated GIS system instead of MapQuest, which is commercial and not always accurate.
Make provisions for FaceBook user to get emergency messages.
A blog provision for asking public questions of our political leaders. Their e-mail seems to be a black hole, and public questions might bring faster answers. Public questions and answers could generate a community dialog is critical issues.
Provide more links to community information sources including local blogs.
Put more what's news items on the front page, less words in a paragraph, more like a list
I would like more options for RSS feeds. For example, I would like a separate feed for the library information page.
Make CPS and APS forms/ report of abuse forms/ available with the capability of emailing directly to department after completed.
Contra Costa County has an interesting feature linked to its website - Virtual Self-Help Law Center - located at http://www.cc-courthelp.org . I recently spoke with the staff person who maintains it and learned that the information is kept up to date by attorneys who are knowledgeable in the various fields of law. All we'd need to do is provide a link. It's free!
